| J. 'Moose' Kahrs How
does someone end up with a name like Moose? Nobody
ever gets to pick their own nickname! His love for music
began when he picked up a guitar at age 9. During high
school and college he played in all kinds of disparate
musical situations ranging from big band jazz to thrash
metal and he was also that kid with a 4-track who would
record anything. After attending college for music performance
& production he landed an internship at Showplace
Studios in NJ. While working at the studio he was assisting
and learning the fundamentals and “how-to”
from the producers & engineers that worked there
like Joe Barresi, Jason Corsaro, Ben Elliot, &
Bill Klatt.
mad moose recording circa 2002 |
In 1999 J. opened Mad Moose Recording and put
his skills to use making records for indie bands and
labels. As the owner and chief engineer of Mad Moose
he ran a 2200 sq. foot recording facility that hosted
projects from all kinds of clients like V2 Records,
Sony, Artist Amplification, Lonesome Records as well
as countless indie producers, labels and artists. After
falling victim to the evils of too many corporate policies
and voiceovers, Moose decided to close the doors in
late 2004 rather then taking the alternative route…beating
himself to death with a $40 Chinese condenser microphone.
Friends
don’t let friends mix monitors... For several
years Moose honed the sword of his audio engineering skills
to a fine point by working as a live sound engineer. The
hostile war-ground of the live environment is incredible
on the job training. At a show it’s either sink
or swim with one chance to get it right…no room
for mistakes and usually, no soundcheck!?! Whether it’s
recording & mixing a show or a live broadcast
from a festival Moose is able to adapt like a chameleon
and get the job done. He’s traveled in a van and
been the house engineer at metro NY clubs. Over the years
he’s mixed for scores of artists including;
The North Mississippi All-Stars, Chuck Garvey (moe.),
Karl Densons Tiny Universe, Steve Kimock, Pilot To Gunner,
Derek Trucks Band, Living Colour, Maceo Parker, The Radiators,
Tinsley Ellis, Antigione Rising, Tea Leaf Green, New Monsoon,
Swampadelica and many unforgettable others.
